Understanding the Need

The Reality Behind the Photos
As you explore this website, you will see smiling children, thriving schools, mission teams, and stories of hope. While these images reflect the incredible work God is doing through The Arms of Jesus Children's Mission, they do not fully capture the reality of the communities we serve.
Many of the families in Guatemala and Haiti face challenges that most Canadians and Americans will never experience. Parents work tirelessly to provide for their children, yet many still struggle with poverty, food insecurity, inadequate housing, limited educational opportunities, and limited access to healthcare.

Guatemala
Despite being one of the largest economies in Central America, poverty remains widespread throughout Guatemala. More than half of the population lives below the poverty line, while many families in rural communities face even greater challenges. Child malnutrition remains among the highest rates in the Western Hemisphere, affecting nearly half of children under the age of five.
All of the families connected to Arms of Jesus live in communities where employment opportunities are limited, wages are low, and educational opportunities can be difficult to access. For many children, sponsorship provides opportunities that would otherwise be out of reach.

Haiti
Haiti remains the poorest country in Latin America and the Caribbean. Political instability, natural disasters, economic hardship, and widespread food insecurity continue to affect millions of people across the country.
Many families struggle to secure adequate food, education, healthcare, and safe housing. Despite these challenges, the people of Haiti demonstrate remarkable resilience, faith, and determination. Through Christian education, vocational training, community outreach, and the faithful support of sponsors, children are being given opportunities to build a brighter future.

How Poverty Impacts Children and Families
Hunger and Nutrition
For many families, putting food on the table is a daily challenge. Children may arrive at school hungry or without having eaten a nutritious meal. Hunger affects not only physical health but also a child's ability to learn, concentrate, and succeed in the classroom.
Education
Education is one of the most powerful tools for breaking the cycle of poverty. Yet for many families, the costs associated with school can place education beyond their reach. Without assistance, some children would never have the opportunity to complete their education.
Housing
Many families live in overcrowded homes made from materials that offer little protection from rain, wind, and extreme weather. Some homes have dirt floors, inadequate sanitation, or lack basic necessities that many of us take for granted.
Health
Access to basic medicines and dental care can be limited, particularly in rural communities. Conditions that are easily treated in North America can become serious health concerns when families lack access to affordable care.
The Greatest Need Is Spiritual
While poverty creates many physical challenges, we believe the greatest need is spiritual. Many children and families have never experienced a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. At Arms of Jesus, our mission extends beyond meeting physical needs—we seek to share the hope of the Gospel and help children and families discover the transforming love of Christ.
