Does Sponsorship Work?

Raised in Parramos, Guatemala, Angel entered the Arms of Jesus sponsorship program as a young student with big dreams for his future. Through the support of sponsors, Christian education, caring teachers, and the encouragement of the ministry, he was given opportunities to learn, grow, and pursue those dreams.

Today, Angel serves as the Elementary Computers and Technology Teacher at The Arms of Jesus school—the very same school where he once sat as a sponsored child.

In addition to teaching, Angel plays an important role in many ministry events. Mission teams visiting Guatemala will often see him operating the audio-visual equipment during worship services, special events, graduations, and school programs. His knowledge of technology and willingness to serve have made him a valued member of the ministry team.

Every day, Angel invests in the lives of students who are walking the same halls he once walked, helping them develop skills, confidence, and a vision for their own future.

From Sponsored Student to Teacher

Many years ago, Cristian was a young, sponsored child attending The Arms of Jesus school in Guatemala. Through the support of faithful sponsors, Christian education, and the encouragement of those around him, he excelled in his studies and graduated with a vision for his future.

After graduation, Cristian pursued further education in tourism and culinary arts. Today, he works as a professional chef, using the skills and opportunities he developed through years of hard work and determination.

From Sponsored Student to Chef

Luis grew up in Parramos, Guatemala, facing significant challenges from an early age. After the death of his father when he was just two years old, his mother worked tirelessly to provide for Luis and his three sisters. With limited resources, the prospect of receiving a quality education seemed out of reach.

 

Everything changed when his mother learned about The Arms of Jesus Children's Mission. Through sponsorship, Luis was able to attend AOJ, where he received a Christ-centred education and graduated with a specialization in Business Administration.

 

After graduation, Luis continued pursuing his dreams. While working in the fields during the day to help pay for his studies, he attended university at night, studying Systems Engineering and improving his English skills.

 

Today, Luis works for an international company as a Spanish-English interpreter, earning a professional salary that allows him to continue his education, support his mother, and provide a better future for his family.

 

Looking back, Luis credits God, The Arms of Jesus Children's Mission, and his faithful sponsor for helping him achieve goals that once seemed impossible.

From Sponsored Student to Business Translator

Corrine first met Melody when she was 12 years old and began sponsoring her through The Arms of Jesus Children's Mission.

From an early age, Melody was dedicated to her studies and determined to make the most of every opportunity she was given. Supported by a loving family, faithful sponsors, and a Christ-centred education, she worked hard and successfully graduated from AOJ at the age of 18.

Today, Melody is pursuing her dream of becoming a social worker. While studying part-time, she also teaches English to a Grade 2 class at a private school, helping support herself as she continues her education.

As a young student, Rosio was given the opportunity to attend The Arms of Jesus school through the support of a faithful sponsor. Coming from a family with limited resources, access to a quality Christian education would have been difficult without sponsorship.

Sponsorship Frequently Asked Questions

Can I write to my child?

Yes! In fact, we strongly encourage sponsors to write to their sponsored children.

Receiving a letter is often one of the most meaningful and encouraging experiences for a child. Knowing that someone is praying for them, thinking about them, and taking an interest in their life can have a lasting impact.

Sponsors can send letters, messages, and photos through our Sponsor Portal. Children also have opportunities to respond with letters, drawings, and updates of their own, helping to build a meaningful connection between sponsor and child.

Can I visit my child?

Yes! We would love for you to meet your sponsored child.

Sponsors are welcome to join an Arms of Jesus mission team to Guatemala or work with their home church to organize a mission team through AOJ. Meeting your sponsored child in person can be an incredibly meaningful experience and provides an opportunity to see firsthand the impact of sponsorship and the ministry taking place in Guatemala.

Unfortunately, due to the ongoing instability and security concerns in Haiti, sponsors are not currently able to visit or meet their sponsored children in person. We continue to monitor the situation closely and pray for the day when travel to Haiti can safely resume.

In the meantime, sponsors can continue building a meaningful connection with their sponsored child through letters, messages, photos, and updates.

How often do I receive updates?

Each sponsor receives an annual update prepared by our social work team. This report includes information about your sponsored child's educational progress, family situation, personal development, and any prayer requests they may have.

Sponsors of children in Guatemala will also typically receive 2–3 letters or drawings from their sponsored child throughout the year, along with an updated annual photograph.

If you sponsor a child in Guatemala or Haiti and would like an update at any time, simply contact our office. We would be happy to reach out to our field staff and provide additional information about your sponsored child's progress and wellbeing whenever possible.

What happens when my child graduates?

The Arms of Jesus Children's Mission is committed to supporting children through their educational journey until graduation, which typically occurs by the age of 18.

In some cases, a student may require additional time to complete their studies. When this happens, we contact the sponsor, explain the situation, and ask whether they would be willing to continue supporting the student until graduation. The decision is entirely up to the sponsor.

Once a student graduates, sponsorship concludes and sponsors are given the opportunity to begin supporting another child in need.
