Guerda

December 12th, 2014
Cap-Rouge, Haiti
Guerda Jean is girl who was born on December 12, 2014, she is 11, in the area of Cap Rouge, communal section of Cayes Jacmel, the South East of Haiti. She is the daughter of Antoine Decima Jean her father and Micheline Jean Baptiste her mother, in a family with a total of three children. Her parents are farmers who work the land with great courage to feed the family and make a living. Currently, Guerda lives with her mother in the same community of Cap Rouge, where life requires many sacrifices every day due to a lack of resources.
The family’s housing conditions clearly show the level of difficulty they are facing. They live in a house made of stone and covered with a tin roof, which has three rooms inside. This house only has the most necessary items, such as a cupboard, a bed, and a few chairs. To get water, they depend entirely on a cistern, and they must use wood to cook because they have no other resources. Despite all these burdens, Guerda is a healthy child who loves to play in her free time with her sister and is very serious about her schoolwork.
Currently, she is in 6th grade and has excellent grades, but her future is under a great threat because her parents’ economic situation is becoming more difficult every day. Since they only make a living from their gardens, they depend entirely on nature ; when it does not rain or the harvest is not good, the family falls into a total crisis where they have many difficulties managing even the children’s basic needs.
Guerda has reached a level of school that requires a lot of support 6th grade, and without quick help or sponsorship, she risks losing the chance to continue her studies. This help is the only way to guarantee that Guerda stays in school so she can continue to prepare for her future, despite the poverty affecting the family.
